The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
